ASHIC started the Support-a-Life program in 2004 to help the needy patients financially for the treatment cost,to support them to continue to complete their maintenance course of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Mostly the parents did not want to complete the maintenance course referred by the Pediatric Oncologists of the hospital. Due to lack of illiteracy and financial constraints .The parents of ALL cancer children could not continue the maintenance course for another 2/3 years resulting in increase of relapse cases. ASHIC found that if the maintenance course of the children who have completed their treatment can be supported then they can successfully complete their full course and become survivors. The supporting started for ALL maintenance courses and still continuing and later the support was also introduced for Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia (AML) (Type-3). ASHIC’s involvement in supporting maintenance of (ALL) and AML (Type-3) patients were found encouraging. Gradually from 2004 on wards children are becoming survivors.
Later we found that if we can continue the treatment support of the cancer diseases like Retinoblastoma, Germ Cell Tumor and Hodgkin’sDisease, the patients can easily become survivors. The prognosis of the diseases is good and can be cured if screened early and treatment started immediately.As such the treatment support for these 3 types of cancer was also introduced in the Support-a-Life Program.

Maintenance Course:
To support a Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia (AML, type 3) maintenance course cost on an average of 1 patient per month is BDT 3000 but our support is BDT 2500/-per month. Each patient receives support for 2/3 years .
Treatment:
To support a Retinoblastoma Disease Child the treatment cost on an average of 1 patient is BDT 7000/- but our support is BDT 3000/-per month. Each patient receives support for 6/12 cycles .
To support a Germ-cell tumor/Hodgkin’s Disease the treatment cost on an average of 1 patient is BDT 12000/- but our support is BDT 5000/- per month.
